Baez Jumps To The Mets Organization

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – This is not how Kevin Baez wanted to end his Duck career.
A 13-6 loss to the Somerset Patriots isn’t what he wanted as a sendoff, but the former Mets’ shortstop will take it.
That’s because the infielder turned coach will be jumping from the Ducks to the Mets as the Amazins’ new minor league instructor. He will be leaving Long Island to go to Post St. Lucie this week.
“They have an extended spring there,” said Baez, who had stints with the Mets from 1990 to 1993. “I will be there until the short season A-ball teams break. They told me it’s a 50/50 chance that I will go to Brooklyn or stay there.”
It’s an ideal situation for the 40 year-old Baez if he gets to coach in Brooklyn. He grew up in nearby Bensonhurst and was born down the block from Keyspan Park.
Yet, more importantly he gets a chance to coach in affiliated ball, which was his goal when he took up coaching full time in 2005.
“Obviously when you get into the organization you want to get to the big leagues at sometime,” Baez said.” I know I am knowledgeable, so I will work up the ladder. Go to Brooklyn for a couple of years and then maybe right to Shea.”
Well, maybe not that quick, but a member of the Mets’ Fantasy Camps, Baez knows the coaches and the system, so it could be an easy transition.
“I have been here, and last year [Mets’ minor league coordinator] Kevin Morgan last year asked me if I was available if need be,” he said. “I went down to talk him at Shea. Last year didn’t work out, but they had my name in the mix. It’s just nice to get my foot in the door and know the policies and help young kids get better. “
