Ducks Slap Sharks - Prepare For Playoffs
by: Gary Harding | Staff Writer - NY Sports Day | Tuesday, September 26 2006
CENTRAL ISLIP, NY - A five run outburst in the seventh and eighth innings, along with strong pitching from Kevin Mannix, propelled the Long Island Ducks to a 9-7 victory over the Camden Riversharks, in front of a crowd of 6,197 at Citibank Park. Long Island (34-29 – 73-53 overall), enjoyed their best season under manager Don McCormack and will begin their run for the Atlantic Division championship on Tuesday evening, as they travel across the Sound to Bridgeport to take on the Bluefish in the first game of a three game series. "We got the right frame of mind right now", said McCormack. "Guys got days off, we even got (Pat) Mahomes in the game, and got him an at-bat. We had a lot of fun today besides getting the win." After a manufactured run in the first inning scored by Elvis Pena, Long Island tapped on another run in the next frame, when Dominick Ambrosini, who started the inning with a single and moved to third on a line-hugging double by Kevin Haverbusch, scored on a Brad King sacrifice fly. The third run crossed as Elvis Pena, sliced a single to right off Riversharks starter Kevin Costello, scoring Haverbusch.
«FULL STORY» Mahomes Strong As Ducks Win, 7-3

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y.— Seeing the starting rotation of his former team become slowly depleted with each successive injury, Ducks’ pitcher Pat Mahomes can only wonder if a fast start in the Atlantic League can be his ticket back to the big leagues. The 36-year-old watched as the Mets put a third starting pitcher on the disabled list yesterday, and with the state of quality pitching in major league baseball in general, Mahomes and his 308 major league appearances might soon look very attractive to a big-league club that wants to bolster its pitching depth. In his home debut, Mahomes made another strong showing for potential suitors, allowing only two runs in six innings to lead the Ducks to a 7-3 victory over the Camden Riversharks at Citibank Park. On a perfect day for baseball, Mahomes’ only mistake came in the sixth, when Brad Strauss hit his first home run of the year by lining a two-run shot to left that ended the shutout bid. “The first couple of innings, I really struggled with my stuff,” Mahomes said. “I got comfortable around the third and fourth inning. Then things started going pretty good.”
